Call to Stand and Agree

Pastor Chang Kim

Philippians 4:1-3

1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!

I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Introduction

Starting in chapter 3:12 he begins:

V12: Press on, Christ made him His own

V13: Straining forward to what lies ahead

V14: Press on toward the prize, Upward call

V15: Mature thing this way

V17: Imitate Paul, keep your eyes on those who walk in example

V20: Citizenship in heaven, awaiting a Savior

V21: Transition our lowly body to be like His glorious body

I.          Stand F v.1

Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

God kept strengthening me and encouraged me. We will get through this together.

Jesus must become our cornerstone. He must become our rock that we build upon.

II.        Agree in the Lord v.2

2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord.

“Agree” having the same mind.

Reconciliation and mutual love.

III.      Work toward Peace v.3

1 Corinthian 4:5  Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

Conclusion

Discussion Questions

  1. What do you think it means to stand firm in the Lord?

  2. Why do you think people have a hard time agreeing with each other, especially in the church?

  3. What are we to do when there is a disagreement?
